I've started a new project that you might consider doing -- paintings for people on the front lines of Covid-19. This painting is a sample of one that will be among those. My plan is to write "Thank you for all you're doing" along the bottom right or left of each painting with the person's name and the date. I've had quite a few friends and relatives give me the names of people they'd like to be recipients of these paintings.
This painting, like the previous one, depends on using water to get the effect. It's a playful painting, so no need for precision. Just start by lightly drawing fuchsia like these or ones from your garden. This was painted a while ago, so I can't actually recall if I sketched the fuchsias first, but likely not. It's a small painting, 9" x 12", so free hand wasn't risking a huge piece of paper. I chose a bright red and starting at the stem swooped downward to create the wingspread of the upper left fuchsia and then to make sure the spacing was right, repeated this for the second fuchsia. This is a simple palette painting, so just a few colors are all that's needed. Using water in a small cup, I dropped in some of the red to get the lighter color. Work beneath or above the darker red Leave some small white areas. Let that dry. Mix your red and a blue like ultramarine. Once you have a bright lavender-blue, wet the paper -- not too much -- and drop in the color. Have a paper towel nearby to stop any overflow. You should have the basic shape of your fuchsias. Then it's a matter of dropping in color and dabbing with the paper towel. If it doesn't work the first time, try again. This is supposed to be a fun painting, joyful even. Use a slightly wet paper towel to draw some color downward from the red and blue. Or, wet the darker area, let the color flow downward and pull it to the side with the paper towel. Once that was dry, I did some outlining with dioxazine violet. The rest is a matter of drawing with paint colors you prefer. Enjoy!
