About
Welcome to Painting Doc particularly for people with Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions. I had a site like this several years ago after starting to paint. It shared techniques I was learning as a new artist. This site is a continuation of that. Having been diagnosed with PD at an "early onset" point (under age 55), I was still involved in my career as a professor. As often happens in life, that door closed and fortunately a couple of others opened. The first was painting and the second writing fiction - specifically two crime mysteries: Shadow Campus and Damned If She Does.
This site shares what I have learned and continue to learn as an artist. Ways to work with and around motor symptoms will be included, but the main idea is that painting is enjoyable. It's work too! There's no doubt about that. But it's creative work opening pathways in the brain that have either not existed or been dormant.
You may already be an artist. If so, I'd love to hear from you, especially about techniques that you've found useful. If you have PD or another neurological disorder, sharing ways to work with any limitations or even advantages of the disease would be welcome. You may have never held a brush in your hand. That's great too. This site is especially for you because it will describe how many paintings evolved, mistakes made, and lessons learned.
I hope you enjoy this site. It's a work in progress for now. Welcome!
